East Jutland

East Jutland offers a great combination of fertile landscapes and large forests, shores with lovely beaches and busy and exciting cities. In large, East Jutland covers the area stretching from Kattegat in the east to the Viborg area in the west; and from Fredericia in the south to Hobro in the north.

The green and hilly East Jutland is formed by the glaciers of the glacial period. Valleys, gorges and deep fjords were formed where melt water flowed, and when the ice disappeared approx. 14,000 years ago, it left a beautiful and hilly moraine landscape.

East JutlandAlong Kattegat on the peninsula of Djursland and Mols and south of Aarhus, there are many nice and family-friendly beaches with fine sand; the water along the shore is shallow and the sea is not too forceful. Also near the fjords - especially near Horsens and Vejle fjords you find nice and tranquil swimming beaches.

Randers Fjord can be traversed several places with small ferries which arrive when you call - among other places near Mellerup-Voer and Udbyhøj. At the outlet of Horsens Fjord, small ferries depart from Snaptum to the islands of Hjarnø and Endelave.
East Jutland - MolsOn Djursland, you find the nature area of Mols Bjerge (Mols Mountains) with heather-covered hills and mulberry bushes which shortly will open as a nature park. And in the area surrounding Silkeborg and Skanderborg, the Sea Highland of Middle Jutland is found with Denmark's largest stream, Gudenåen, a large number of beautiful lakes and a formidable view from Himmelbjerget (the Sky Mountain) near Ry.

South of Viborg lies Hald Lake and the protected Dollerup Hills, where the landscape is spectacular and unspoiled. And to the west of Viborg is Kongenshus Memorial Park in the middle of the Jutland Moor with heather-covered areas as far as the eye can see. The soil is sandy and calcareous and in Mønsted and Daugbjerg lime mines north of the memorial park, lime has been extracted for centuries. The abandoned mines are open to the public who can come inside and experience the deep mine tunnels and enormous bat colonies.

Grejsdalen valley northwest of Vejle is Denmark's largest gorge. The area is unique and the scenery is beautiful with forest covered slopes and at the bottom runs Grejs Stream. Also in Vejle Ådal (Vejle Stream valley) there are beautiful nature experiences to be found.
East Jutland - AnholtThe Kattegat island of Samsø is green and fertile and on the northern part of the island, the last glacial time left an impressive and hilly landscape. Along the coast, there are beautiful beaches and throughout you find cosy villages and on Besser Rev (Besser Reef) there are both breeding seals and birds. Samsø is known for its vegetable and fruit production but also for the use of renewable energy. A nice way to experience Samsø is by joining a prairie carriage holiday. You can reach the island by ferry from Hou and Kalundborg.

In the middle of Kattegat, you also find Anholt, which is one of Denmark's most isolated islands. The major part of the island is desert with large sand dune landscapes and unending beaches and at the top of the desert - which by the way is Northern Europe's largest - spotted seals breed in large numbers. Anholt can be reached by ferry from Grenaa.
East Jutland - Vadestedet, AarhusÅrhus - Eastern Jutland's main city and Denmark's second largest city - is lively and dynamic with a cosy Latin Quarter and a popular street along the inlet. The city also offers world class sights and has a university population of some 40,000 students.

While Viborg is one of the country's oldest cities with a beautiful medieval town surrounding the formidable cathedral, it is also Denmark's first industrial city. It expanded in the middle of the 19th century when they started to explore the water power from the Gudenåen stream to produce paper.

East Jutland - LegolandEbeltoft with pretty old houses and cobbled streets is home to the Frigate Jutland, and it is a harbour city with ferries to Zealand. Also Grenaa is a harbour city and a traffic centre with ferries to both Sweden and the island of Anholt - the Kattegat Centre with tropical sharks and local fish is the city's main attraction.

Hobro, Randers, Horsens and Vejle are all situated at the bottom of deep fjords while the old fortress city Fredericia is beautifully situated by the Little Belt. Billund to the west of Vejle is home to one of the region's largest attractions, the original LEGOLAND®.
The old Military Road which runs from Viborg to the Danish-German border, is a popular hiking and cycling route and since 2008 also a pilgrimage route. Gudenåen and the Silkeborg Lakes are great for canoeing and kayaking and anglers find great angling waters in the streams of Eastern Jutland and along the Kattegat coast.
East Jutland - Silkeborg MuseumThere are many excellent art museums in Eastern Jutland, among others ARoS Art Museum in Aarhus with old and contemporary art, Silkeborg Art Museum with a large collection of the city's own Asger Jorn's CoBRA-paintings and Ebeltoft Glass Museum featuring Danish and international glass art.

At the town museum The Old Town in Aarhus you get a living impression of how life was led in the town from the 17th century through to the 1920s. And at Silkeborg Museum, you can meet Tollundmanden - a well-preserved moor body from year 400 BC.

Approximately 1200 years ago, the Vikings settled in Aarhus, a fact that the city's Viking museum, Moesgård Museum, explores. The museum has among other things runic stones and reconstructed Viking houses and near the town of Hobro is Fyrkat which is one of four known ring castles from the Viking Age in Denmark. In Jelling west of Vejle, two burial mounds and two runic stones tell about the first Viking kings, Gorm the Elder and Harald Bluetooth, who gathered Denmark in one kingdom and introduced Christianity to the country. The museum ”Kongernes Jelling” (The Kings' Jelling) tells the story.

Later times' squires built a number of beautiful castles and manor houses in Eastern Jutland, e.g. Old Estrup, which now is a manor house museum, Rosenholm, Clausholm and Frijsenborg.
